Established in 1966, the Warsaw International Poster Biennale is the world’s most longstanding poster competition, with 2006 marking the 20th time it has been held. Each time the competition has attracted high-quality works from numerous designers, propelling the prizewinners into the international spotlight in a fashion that fully justifies its reputation as the Olympics of the poster world.

This exhibition retraces the competition’s history by introducing previous prizewinning entries from the collection of the Poster Museum at Wilanow (a department of the National Museum in Warsaw), which provides the venue for the Biennale. The “wind” of its title has both rushed into and blown out of Warsaw. Visitors can not only follow its trajectory through the past 40 years, but also sense the stirrings of a new era.

Maria Kurpik, director of the Poster Museum at Wilanow, will attend the exhibition’s opening, and will speak about both trends in poster culture during the past 40 years and the social transformations that have provided their context.
