Toshisato Hagihara
Toshisato Hagihara's paintings are mysterious. At first glance, his well-crafted landscapes appear to be real, but in fact they do not exist in the world as we know it. He does not make preparatory sketches for his paintings, but simply starts applying oil paint to the canvas and drawing lines as he sees them in his head. His landscapes do not exist so he is not referring to any photographs, nor does he make composite photographs in order to create his works; he just makes them appear by himself. His finalized works look like Mars or Venus, or some other planet that is billions of light years away from us; equally one could say they look like the Jurassic or Cretaceous Period. And yet they are neither. This is because the worlds being depicted come from within his heart. This exhibition presents works that have been made on canvas in a way that would normally make one think of CG.
