Tamotsu Sato
Tamotsu Sato (1919–2004), born at Kannon-ji in Kokubunji, Tokyo, was a Japanese painter known for merging Buddhist art with abstract expression. After graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts and enduring wartime hardships, inspiration struck during a 1949 visit to Oze, leading to the creation of the celebrated Skunk Cabbage Mandala series, which spanned over 50 years. Sato continued working until death at 85. The exhibition highlights themes such as Wartime Diary and Skunk Cabbage Mandala, showcasing vibrant landscapes and abstract art. A special three-day display of the Skunk Cabbage Mandala 36-panel Folding Screen, dedicated to Kannon-ji, offers a rare opportunity to view this unique art.
