160th Anniversary of Publication - 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'

Takashimaya Yokohama
Finished
In 1862, over 160 years ago, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (pen name: Lewis Carroll) spontaneously told a story to his friend's daughter, Alice Liddell, which led to the birth of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." In 1864, Carroll presented her with a handmade book titled "Alice's Adventures Underground" with illustrations, and he asked Alexander Macmillan to publish it. With illustrations by the renowned caricaturist John Tenniel, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" was completed and published in 1865, followed by the sequel "Through the Looking-Glass" in 1871.

In 1903, Macmillan in the UK published a color version of Tenniel's illustrations. Later, based on Tenniel's illustrations, in 1911, a series of 16 watercolor illustrations by Harry G. Theaker was published, and in 1927, a series of 34 color illustrations by John Macfarlane, who was active at Macmillan in the UK, was published. Furthermore, in 1995, to commemorate the 130th anniversary of its publication, 76 illustrations that Harry G. Theaker had not drawn were illustrated by female artist Diz Wallis, thus all the illustrations of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass" were colored.

In this exhibition, original illustrations along with printing plates and valuable materials will be displayed. This comprehensive showcase from the archives of Macmillan is a first in Japan.
