Shuho Ikegami
Shuho Ikegami (1874-1944), born in present-day Takatocho, Ina City, Nagano Prefecture, became the first disciple and apprentice of Araki Kankan, who was not widely known. From 1916 to 1918, he won the Bunten Special Selection award for three consecutive years, and he served as an inspector and judge at the Teiten, representing the conservative faction within official exhibitions.

Although Ikegami's works are often grouped under the label of the "conservative faction," he pursued a new approach to Japanese painting from a different perspective than the Shinpa movement, represented by Shunso Hishida, who was also from southern Nagano Prefecture and the same age. Ikegami not only focused on exhibition art but also worked on interior decorations such as fusuma paintings and mural paintings, gaining support from his contemporaries. However, in recent years, there has been less research on Ikegami compared to the Shinpa movement, and he has not been featured as frequently in exhibitions.

On the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary, this exhibition will trace the life and representative works of Shuho Ikegami, considered a representative of the conservative faction, and reflect on the entirety of Ikegami's artistic career, which is by no means "old."
