Artists

Reiko Sudo, David Nash, Harumi Nakashima, Katsura Funakoshi, Kimiyo Mishima
Enku was born in Mino Province during the Edo period (1603-1867) and is said to have carved as many as 120,000 statues of gods and Buddha during his lifetime while traveling throughout Japan as an ascetic monk. The exhibition, which brings together the works of these award-winning artists, who may be called the Enku of the 21st century, has been highly acclaimed as an outstanding contemporary art exhibition.

For the 11th Enku Grand Prize Exhibition, five contemporary artists have been selected whose works evoke Enku's way of life.
Reiko Sudo (Enku Grand Prize winner) continues to pursue the possibilities of textile design, focusing not only on natural and synthetic fibers, but also on a variety of materials such as Japanese paper and biodegradable plastic, and working with artisans and dyers from all over Japan. David Nash, uses fallen trees and standing dead trees as materials, and breathes new life into his works through residencies with local people in the nature that nurtured them; Harumi Nakashima, pursues not traditional vessels but figurative beauty in the plasticity of clay and the changes in form expressed by firing it; and the artist; Katsura Funakoshi consistently pursues the theme of "What is a human being?" and continues to express the human figure facing itself by embedding marble eyes in wood carvings of camphor wood, a style he has established; and Kimiyo Mishima uses ceramics to express a sense of anxiety and fear in modern society, where the flood of information and mass-consumed products are turning into trash, and she also uses molten slag as a material to deepen her interest in environmental issues.

The 11th Enku Grand Prize Exhibition will attempt to create a venue in which the works of the prize winners will resonate with the seven Enku Buddhist statues in Hashima City, Gifu Prefecture.
