"The Surrealist Movement," the largest art movement of the 20th century, began in France and influenced art, thought, and culture worldwide, captivating Japanese artists as well.

In the late 1920s, Surrealism in Japan, which initially started in the field of poetry, gradually spread to the realm of painting. The surrealist painting expressions pioneered by artists like Harue Koga and Seiichi Togo were introduced more extensively in Japan by Ichiro Fukuzawa, who was influenced in France. This influence extended among young painters and art students. However, as the years progressed from pre-war to wartime, the situation surrounding Surrealism in Japan gradually worsened. Paintings created during these challenging times transformed into expressions where the earnest feelings and thoughts of the artists seeped through and were carried over into the post-war era.

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the publication of the "Surrealist Manifesto," this exhibition primarily showcases Japanese paintings influenced by Surrealism. It introduces the development of diverse images while reflecting on the era in which these artists lived.
