Founded in 2009, the TOKYO ART BOOK FAIR (TABF) is the first book fair in Japan dedicated to art publications. Held annually, it brings together independent publishers, gallery presses, bookstores, and individual artists and groups from all over the world. A full list of participants can be found on the official website. In addition to approximately 300 exhibitors, TABF will feature special exhibitions and booths. The fair will run from November 23 through November 26, 2023.
As a part of the special exhibition section, the Kiyosato Museum of Contemporary Art will present an Archive Project Exhibition featuring part of its collection and the results of the project that preserves the art books, materials, and ephemera left behind by Joseph Beuys, Arnulf Rainer, and Fluxus members.
Thomas Kong, born in North Korea and currently based in Chicago, is an artist and convenience store owner. He began making small collages to decorate the inside of his small store, Kim’s Corner Food, when he was over 60 years old. The special exhibition ARTS FOR SALE will feature part of his extensive collection of work, unique art books, and archival materials.
Exciting events will also take place around the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo during the fair. The map of the neighborhood spaces introduces galleries, bookstores, restaurants, cafes, and shops near the venue, which will offer special benefits for TABF attendees. In addition, the mini-theater Stranger will hold a Nordic Film Festival featuring nine documentary films.
To celebrate the 90th anniversary, the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art will hold a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Takashi Murakami from February 3 to September 1, 2024. This will be the artist’s first large-scale solo exhibition in Japan in approximately eight years and the first ever outside Tokyo.
Murakami has questioned art’s value and essential meaning through appropriation and collaboration with popular culture such as manga and anime. His career can be interpreted as an ongoing effort to challenge the international art scene, in which the West has become the standard, by offering fresh inspiration from a unique Japanese perspective. His works are widely recognized and collected by museums worldwide, and he has been listed in Art Review magazine’s’ Power 100’ (the 100 most influential people in the art world) for ten years in a row.
Murakami is currently working on special versions of works inspired by Japanese art, such as Kawaii - vacances (Summer Vacation in the Kingdom of the Golden) (2008) and the Korin series (2015), as well as numerous new works that reference the history of Kyoto. Visitors are welcome to explore the newly created world of Takashi Murakami, who has never failed to create an overwhelming aesthetic experience.
