A new production of Giacomo Puccini’s final and unfinished opera “Turandot” is coming to Tokyo with scenography by international art collective teamLab. Following its world premiere at Grand Théâtre de Genève in Switzerland in June last year, it will be performed at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan from February 23 to February 26, 2023.
The production of this immersive operatic experience is produced by Daniel Kramer, the former Artistic Director of the English National Opera. TeamLab worked extensively with Kramer to envisage scenography that would unite Kramer’s interpretation of “Turandot” and teamLab’s unique digital art. Five years of planning resulted in an immersive experience transcending traditional opera concepts. The cast is immersed and unified in the sculptural space of light created by teamLab, and the stage and audience become continuous without boundaries.
The stage design was created by teamLab Architects, who designed a simple yet dynamic geometric stage plan. The rotating set is made of a combination of reflective, soft, and elastic materials, allowing the cast to perform amid the reflections of light. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience a mix between cutting-edge technology and a thrilling performance presented by the Tokyo Nikikai Opera. The Tokyo performance will take place at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan from February 23 to February 26, 2023. Visit the official website for more detailed information on the program and tickets.
