Nintendo Co., Ltd. is a renowned Japanese video game company based in Kyoto. It is the creator and publisher of many iconic franchises, including Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Pokémon, Super Smash Bros., Animal Crossing, and Splatoon. As the company announced in its financial results for the past fiscal year on May 7, Nintendo also revealed the opening of the Nintendo Museum this autumn.
The museum will be located on the site of Nintendo's Uji Ogura Plant (Ogura-cho, Uji-shi, Kyoto). Initially built in 1969, the facility was known as the Uji Plant. In 1988, following the construction, expansion, and renovation of the current Uji Plant (Makishima-cho, Uji-shi, Kyoto), it was renamed the Uji Ogura Plant.
The Uji Ogura Plant was mainly responsible for the production of trading cards and the repair of video game consoles, but as those operations were transferred to the Uji Plant in November 2016, the future use of the site and building was under long consideration.
In June 2021, Nintendo announced the renovation of the Uji Ogura Plan and the construction of a museum facility that would showcase previously released products. Nintendo then announced the official name "Nintendo Museum" in the "Nintendo Direct 2023.9.14" video message released in September 2023.
As Nintendo announced on May 7, the museum's construction is complete, and preparations are underway for the autumn opening.
