The National Art Center, Tokyo, will hold Light: Works from the Tate Collection from July 12, 2023. Featuring carefully selected works from Tate's collection based on the theme of light, this exhibition traces artists' creative process across two centuries, from the end of the eighteenth century to the present day. Visitors can look forward to an unprecedented opportunity to see over 120 works, including over 100 pieces, exhibited for the first time in Japan.
Highlights include works by British art icon and "painter of light" Joseph Mallord William Turner, virtuoso landscape painter John Constable, and explorations of light by Impressionists including Claude Monet.
However, the exhibition is not solely focused on modern paintings. The invention of photography in the 1830s brought with it new and revolutionary ways to explore the qualities and effects of light. As photographic technology evolved in the late 19th century, artists experimented with light as a means of expression. Experimental works by László Moholy-Nagy and Wassily Kandinsky and works by contemporary artists such as Bridget Riley, James Turrell and Olafur Eliasson, and Yayoi Kusama are also coming to Tokyo.
For the exhibition's duration, the "Salon de Thé Ronde" café on the museum's second floor will collaborate with the British lifestyle brand "Wedgwood." Visitors can enjoy a special menu, coffee, tea, and cake sets served on Wedgwood china tableware.
Advance ticket sales for the exhibition will begin on June 19. Don't miss the opportunity to see iconic works from Tate’s collection and secure original goods from the museum's store.
