Hayao Miyazaki's new feature film, “How Do You Live?” will be released in Japanese theaters on July 14, 2023. While it was previously frequently reported that a new film was in production, this is the first time the film's title has been officially announced. The poster, illustrated by Miyazaki himself, features a bird-like character.
The film's title, “Kimi-tachi wa Do Ikiru ka" (How Do You Live?),” is inspired by the same-name novel by Genzaburo Yoshino, published in 1937. The book will also be an essential motif in the film's original storyline. Miyazaki's previous work, “The Wind Rises” (released in 2013), was based on the life of aeronautical engineer Jiro Horikoshi and Tatsuo Hori's 1937 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. The film can be interpreted as Miyazaki's artist theory.
What can we expect from the new movie based on Yoshino's children's book written before the outbreak of the Pacific War? The anticipation is high for the first new Miyazaki animated film in 10 years.
