MAHO KUBOTA GALLERY will hold Thinking of the Yesterday’s Sky, a solo exhibition of contemporary artist AKI INOMATA. The exhibition will open on August 25 and run irregularly through September 16.

AKI INOMATA (1983-) lives and works in Tokyo. Focusing on the idea that “making” is not exclusive to humans, her works often feature collaborations with animals and explore the relationships between animals and humans and the resulting creation.

Thinking of the Yesterday’s Sky recreates the sky pattern of the previous day in a glass filled with water. It is an ongoing project that the artist began in 2020 and was realized after developing the technology to 3D print liquids on liquids. The work is inspired by the time AKI INOMATA spent looking at the sky from the window of her room, while the restrictions on movement during the pandemic reinforced the idea that “today will not be the same as yesterday.”

The exhibition seeks to make viewers acutely aware of the present moment in the ceaseless flow of time. Visitors will be able to see yesterday’s sky in a glass placed on a table, as well as video and photographic works that record the appearance of the glass.

*Please note that the gallery will be open irregularly during the exhibition, so be sure to check the schedule before your visit.
