Held every three years since 2010, the Aichi Triennale is one of Japan’s most significant international art festivals. The festival is held at various venues, including the Aichi Arts Center, in cities throughout Aichi Prefecture and features a diverse lineup of Japanese and international artists. It has been announced that Hoor Al Qasimi (President and Director of the Sharjah Art Foundation) has been appointed as Artistic Director for the upcoming Aichi Triennale 2025.
Hoor Al Qasimi established the Sharjah Art Foundation in 2009 as a catalyst and supporter of the arts in Sharjah, across the region, and beyond. With a passion for supporting experimentation and innovation, she has expanded the Foundation’s reach to include major international touring exhibitions; artist and curator residencies in the visual arts, film, and music; commissions and production grants for emerging artists; publications and publication grants; performance and film festivals; architectural research and restoration; and a wide range of educational programs for all ages.
Since becoming co-curator of the 6th Sharjah Biennial (2003), she has served as its Biennial Director and was appointed curator of the 15th Sharjah Biennial (2023). She was also elected President of the International Biennial Association in 2017, President of The Africa Institute, and President and Director of the Sharjah Architecture Triennial. She has served on the boards of MoMA PS1, New York, UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, etc.
With her exceptional qualities, Hoor Al Qasimi is prepared to lead the Aichi Triennale to artistic excellence that will inspire and captivate audiences worldwide:
I am very honored and pleased to be appointed as Artistic Director of Aichi Trienniale 2025. I have had a long history with Japan, its language, culture, artists and curators and am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside many more professionals to learn more about Aichi and to work closely with local artists and communities to produce what I hope would be a meaningful exhibition and project.
In my 20 years of experience working at Sharjah Biennial and other biennials, as well as my role as President of the International Biennal Association, I am looking forward to highlighting the work of Aichi Triennale and the upcoming addition as well as collaborating with various partners across the globe.
