The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Museum in The Ueno area
The museum's compendium, of which collection began prior to the establishment of the university in 1887, has now reached 28,000 artifacts. The current museum was inaugurated in 1996 after voices from within and without the university asking for a transfer from the original space within the library that was increasingly becoming unsatisfactory due to the ever expanding collection. In 1998 the institution was expanded and renamed to its current name from the original University Resource Center to further develop its activities as a museum. The museum seeks to be experimental making use of its particular institutional character as a place for creation and education as well as research.
