Murauchi Art Museum was opened in November 1982 at Hachioji City, west of Tokyo. The founder is Mr.Michimasa Murauchi who manages Murauchi Furniture Access Co. and collects western paintings. His collection is characterized by its emphasis on paintings by the 19th century naturalist school of France represented by Corot, Courbet, Th.Rousseau or J.-F.Millet as well as other Barbizon school. Works of Impressionist painters like Monet, Degas, Renoir etc. and 20th century painters like Chagall, Laurincin, Kisling etc. are also contained in his collection. Especially the quality of the Barbizon school collection is the finest one in Japan.
