Pandas always seem to be in a good mood - if they get tired, they just start munching and chomping, roll around the place, and everything's OK.
This exhibition is held to coincide with the release of the documentary film "Pandaful Life and the release for sale of the photo book "Pandaful Days".
On sale is a panda photo book stuffed to the brim with hitherto unknown panda secrets, curated by Zhang Zhihe, an expert who has racked up more than 20 years experience in panda-related conservation and research. To commemorate the release of the movie and the publication of the book, Zhang is also showing a special collection of lovely panda photos.

Aya Daido (1909-) was born in Hiroshima into a family of painters, which included her mother Suma Maruki and her brother Iri Maruki. Aya began painting when she turned 60, at a time when she was deeply depressed from various hardships she encountered in her life. However, such difficulties in her life or war experiences never showed up in her work. Her paintings always express happiness, employing humorous and lovely animals and plants depicted in vivid colors. This exhibition showcases around 130 works by Daido, mainly consisting of original illustrations used for her picture books and prizewinning paintings.
(2008-06-29 - 2008-09-28)

Iro-e (overglaze enameled) refers to porcelain made by painting motifs or patterns in various colored glazes on top of a white glaze on porcelain that has been fired at around 1350°C and then firing it again at a low temperature of around 900°C. Red, yellow, green, blue, purple. These iro-e motifs and patterns, which lend vivid color to a range of vessels, first began to appear on Imari ware produced in the 1640s in the Arita region of present day Saga Prefecture. According to Oboe, a text handed down in the Kakiemon family, the founder of the Kakiemon family received instruction from Chinese ceramicists shortly before 1647, and succeeded in developing the technique through a process of trial and error. As it is thought that Imari ware first began to be produced in the 1610s, this means that the iro-e technique was developed in the short span of just 30 years. However, the term iro-e covers a wide range of styles, and the technique underwent a series of complex and splendid changes. First came the old Kutani style, which was richly colored and brimming with vigor, then came the Kakiemon style, with its clever use of white underglaze, and the Kinrande style, whose abundant use of gold color brings to mind the liveliness of the Genroku era. Old Imari ware went through various changes in relation to such things as its purpose, function, and even the fashion of the day, and developed in a magnificent fashion. This exhibition focuses on old Imari and iro-e wares and includes around 100 carefully selected pieces. It is hoped that visitors gain an appreciation of the changing colorful beauty of the times as exhibited in these handsome old Imari and iro-e wares.

(2008-08-30 - 2008-10-26)

At the age of 11, John Everett Millais (1829-1896) became the youngest pupil ever to be admitted to the School of Royal Academy of Arts. However, he got soon tired of the classes and the outdated customs of the Academy, and in 1848 he founded the "Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood" with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt. Millais played a central role in this group, which caused a veritable artistic revolution in Britain. This exhibition brings together some of his most representative works, such as Ophelia and Christ in the House of His Parents, borrowed from Tate Britain and other important collections in and outside the United Kingdom. Ranging from oil paintings to sketches and from work he produced in his teens to paintings from the end of his life, it presents a full and comprehensive view of the artist's career, making this event the first real retrospective Millais exhibition in Japan.

Alcohol, tea, coffee and tobacco are the world's four great stimulants, with a long history of giving pleasure to countless people, as well as a rich heritage of fostering and nurturing a wealth of culture. This exhibition, held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of its opening, focuses on how these stimulants relate to the history and culture of Japan, how their use and production developed, and how they came to be adopted by the Japanese. In addition, the rapidly changing face of stimulant culture over the second half of the 20th century, through the sales of these goods in the world's 8 great "kiosks" of distribution, such as New York, Paris and Shanghai, has led to new forms of culture centered around these stimulants, which are also examined at this exhibition.
Various other events that reflect on the history of these stimulants are scheduled for the duration of the exhibition. See website for details.

Iran has produced numerous world-renowned Persian poets since olden times.
These rich words spun out of lyrical rhythms have captured the hearts of many. Strains and verses from classic, well-known poems have often been woven into conversations as well.
A country so rich in poetic sentiment has also produced fascinating picture books and illustrations with a wealth and diversity of content inspired by anything from the details and minutiae of daily life to the mysticism of Islamic traditions. This poetic spirit lives in both the written word and the drawn image, giving birth to a textured, nuanced world of stories and legends.
Carrying on from the exhibition one and a half years ago, which introduced Japanese audiences to young Iranian picture book illustrators and ceramicists, this exhibition spotlights the picture books themselves.
A boom in the production of picture books was seen in Iran in the 1960s, when talented artists, authors and poets gathered, not to make translations of foreign picture books, but rather to begin working to create a native corpus of such works. Starting in the 70s, Iranian artists began to exhibit award-winning works at international competitions in cities like Bologna and Bratislava. In recent years, what has been particularly striking is the new work of younger Iranian illustrators, a trend that has contributed to a rising international appreciation
of the artistry of Iranian picture books.
