Artists

Antonio Lopez
The artist Antonio López (1936- ) is a leading contemporary proponent of Spanish realism. With brilliant technique and penetrating powers of observation, he has created an unparalleled artistic world that attracts enthusiastic devotees throughout the world. Many people in Japan learned about López through the film El Sol del Membrillo (Quince Tree of the Sun) directed by Victor Erice in 1992 which portrays the artist’s painstaking efforts to paint a quince tree growing in his backyard. López is known for taking a great deal of time on his paintings, continuing to retouch them for as long as ten years. He produces realistic images but goes beyond simply copying the forms of things. The objects he paints evoke a sense of time. This exhibition presents 65 carefully selected major works in the genres of painting, drawing, and sculpture, ranging from López’s early student work to the most recent. It includes examples of all of themes he has treated over a long career, from view of Madrid to family portrait, still life, interior, and human body.
