Ganjinwajo National Treasures Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art
Media: Painting, Other, Sculpture
Over 1200 years ago, Toshodaiji temple was built by Ganjinwajo, a high priest from Tang dynasty China who made his way to Japan after surviving a 12 year overseas journey. Among the crucial temple structures which still bear traces of the time, its kondo (main hall) is well known for its Tenpyo-period kondo-specific architectural style, being the only surviving example of the style. Having been renovated 4 times in the past, the kondo is now about to be taken down once again for further repairs. The "Ganjinwajo National Treasures Exhibition" will be held to celebrate this renovation of the kondo.
On view at this exhibition are about 140 items housed in the temple, including 9 national treasures and 34 important cultural properties. Centering on the oldest Japanese figure statue, the "Seated figure of Ganjinwajo" (national treasure) dating from the 8th century, this exhibition will introduce historically significant antiquities from the temple, as well as valuable national assets of Tenpyo-period Buddhist art that flourished against the backdrop of a maturing Tang art.
This is a prime opportunity to acknowledge such a feat by Ganjinwajo, as well as to encounter precious items from antiquity here in Shizuoka.
In addition, there will also be a variety of events held concurrently with the exhibition. Please visit the museum website for details.
