"Using a traditional material, lacquer, I want to explore the possibilities of the material in today's context while executing the ancient lacquer technique established in the Heian era," says Hattori. His original incense burners, tea utensils, and ornamental boxes reveal a modern sensibility. Furthermore, each of them shows his deep consideration for actual use and aesthetic value. He incorporates classical patterns in his dazzling gold lacquer decoration as well as glittering blue and pearl gray seashells imported from Mexico and New Zealand. Utility and beauty, tradition and modernism, Japanese and Western aesthetics -- all of these qualities come together in Hattori's designs.

This is Hattori's 4th solo exhibition, presenting a total of 70 works, including folding screens, 2D works, ornamental boxes, tea utensils and many more. Hattori aims to convey the mysterious beauty of each material and express rich feelings through lacquer art.
