Isao Suzuki is an artist, traveler and ecologist, approaching art from an ecological perspective and the condition of always being on the road. In one sense, Suzuki's work is an extrapolation of the work that Rirkrit Tiravanija began in the 90's. Treating his travels as a work of art in progress, Suzuki traveled to the eight holiest sites in northern India on a solar-powered rickshaw. He has also traveled across Mongolia on a semi-automated bicycle powered by solar and wind generators, scaled the Himalayas with the same vehicle, and toured the area spanning from Hakushu in Yamanashi prefecture to Lake Biwa using a tractor fueled with discarded oil belonging to Butoh artist Min Tanaka, making journeys that are accomplished by respecting ecological principles.
This exhibition introduces four such journeys made by Suzuki, and presents another one that is currently in the works. Suzuki is presently preparing to embark on a cross-country tour of Japan using a moped fueled by oil made from waste plastics. Please support Suzuki in the near future by donating your own waste plastics for him to use as fuel on his next journey.
