The artist, who was born and raised in the suburbs outside Hiroshima, naturally became aware of the significance of August 6th from a young age, assuming also that all of Japan and even the world knew all about the significance of that day - taught about it in history classes, reading and hearing about the experience of the bombing as a part of peace education. Since Sasaoka moved to Tokyo, however, what was meant to be natural and obvious became forgotten. When people found out she was born in Hiroshima, most replied that they had visited the city on a class field trip, but few had any concrete idea of the place.
In the center of the city is the Peace Park and archives, in which are displayed the shadows of people burnt into stone at the time of the explosion, scorched clothes and bicycles, models of human dolls whose skin has been burnt and flayed, hanging off their body. In the park is a memorial spot for comforting the dead, now both part of daily commuting routes and a tourist spot for people to drop by.
Sasaoka has trained her lens on the landscapes of this often deserted park, capturing the strange sense of half-nested time existing somewhere between the past and present, between the memorial park and the dead, between meomry and the seeming absence of the living. Through photography, Sasaoka attempts to traverse and cross over passages of time.
On display are 80 monochrome works of the Peace Park and archives and their surrounding areas, taken since 2001.
