The path of 20th century art was hemmed in by two major world wars that also produced upheavals in art - reforms in sculpture and figuration, as well as a return towards tradition, and repeated, overlapping questions about the basic nature of art itself.
This exhibition traces the evolution of how human figures are portrayed in art, with the cooperation of the Museum of Modern Art in Tokushima Prefecture, which has focuses a large part of its efforts since opening in 1990 on collecting works related to this theme. Around 100 2D and 3D works from that collection will be on display, in an attempt to respond to this question of how to depict the human figure. Works by over 80 artists such as Picasso, Dali, Warhol, Seiji Toriumi, Saburo Asou and Yoshimoto Nara explore the depth of the challenge of human representation through Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism, Pop Art, the advent of gender studies, and the recent return to concrete representations of human figures - all approaches that find a place in this exhibition.
