Takeshi Ishiguro is a highly respected design maverick with a flair for melding gadgets with a sense of poetry. Imagine a smiling, humble young man introducing his designs: a giant smoke ring machine, a performance piece in zero gravity conditions, a "love sofa" that works like a Theremin, laser-cut miniature sculptures of Tokyo buildings that reveal their true beauty when burnt and reduced to ashes...

What is his actual work? How does he arrange for an entire performance crew to be flown around in zero gravity in order to have his unusual piece performed? Who could his clients possibly be? What are those gadgets he invents? Ishiguro will come prepared to the talk with the same spirit that drives his performances: expect him to demonstrate his experimental thinking and production processes with a colorful array of gadgets and tools.

With a new and casual talk format, Ishiguro will share his thoughts on tactile experiences and materials, and aim to engage fully with the audience (...and a dog that will communicate with a device attached to its tail). Bring your curiosity and be inspired!

Right after, we'll have a short segment called the 30-second Pitch. Five members of the audience will be invited to introduce themselves to the audience, promote a recent project, or announce a new product, website or company in under 30 seconds. If you're interested, please give your name and contact info at the reception table. Then for another hour, we'll have drinks, chatting, and networking among guests and audience members. Light meals will also be available.

TAB Talks are bilingual Japanese-English and start at 8:30pm, late enough for overworked designers like us. Limited seating of 90, come early.

Takeshi Ishiguro was born in 1969 in Yamanashi Prefecture and completed the Industrial Design course at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London. He joined the US firm IDEO in 1996, working at the company's San Francisco office on a wide variety of product designs and strategies, such as the Yamaha portable keyboard "PSS-007", and strategic work on office furniture for Steelcase. In 1999, he transferred to the Tokyo office of IDEO and remained there until 2001. In 2002, he began working on his own, and is currently active in product design, art, stage performance, and other fields. His "Rice Salt & Pepper" has been on display in the permanent collection at the New York Museum of Modern Art since 1998, and his "Chimney" humidifier since 2008.
