Keizaburo Okamura (1958-) has in recent years become a sort of standard-bearer for the younger generation of contemporary nihonga artists, attracting attention for his work in this capacity. Although often classified as nihonga, Okamura's work is made on flat panels that have been fired once, after which mineral pigments are applied, the surface of the panel shaved and planed, and finally the image created - in short, innovative techniques previously unthinkable in the field of nihonga. Okamura's subjects range from birds and elephants to imaginary animals like dragons and creatures from Indian legends. However, even when drawing common animals like birds and elephants, his approach is not realistic. Okamura aims to do away with the devices of more traditional nihonga by predecessors such as Hokusai and Jakuchu in an effort to stake his own position on a par with them, creating images that will hopefully arouse wonder and admiration in the viewer. He reconsiders the necessity of connecting human beings with nature, devoting his efforts to the creation of works that evoke vernacular traditions and customs. This exhibition shows a portion of the fruits of that artistic pursuit, featuring 20 recent and new works.
